My mother is 73 and has graves disease for 1 and 1/2 years. Her eyes are terrible–bulging, dripping, swollen. She wants to do something…what is considered the best procedure–surgery, radiation??? Please help. Thanks.

Nancy, I certainly hope she is seeing an Ophthalmologist about this. It is a serious threat to the vision and she can be having high secondary Glaucoma and nerve involvement.

The “usual” procedure is to try to treat first with steroids (prednisone) and if it is still getting worse to consider orbital irradiation. Surgery is considered a last resort if the vision is still severly threatened, or after a couple of years once the eyes have stabilized for cosmetic purposes.

She needs to be watched for continuing proptosis (bulge), Glaucoma and nerve problems by the doctor.

Doesn’t that prednisone suck!! I think it does affect every molecule of the body. The last time they had to up my dose ’cause the vision was going again, I cried hard! It did the job that last time tho and my vision has been good since. One of the main problems I had after being weaned off of it (up to 120 mg/day) was adrenaline problems for a while.

Good luck with the weaning process, remember you can get a bit crazy while getting off of it. (one of the reasons for doing it slowly)

Dawna–you say you were so bad they put you back on prednisone–what exactly got bad–your actual sight, the puffiness, what?? I’m still not sure when it’s a time for predinisone? Thanks, KarenG
