Hi All! First a quick message for you BB old-timers. Rachel and Joann send greetings. Rachel is in the middle of home renovations and will be “down” for awhile. She’s currently working with her doc to get her Synthroid dosage adjusted. Joann sounds like she’s hit the hypo stage and could use some cheery messages at ruddy@fsi.net. They both hope to be back with us soon.

Now about that alcohol question. According to the “Essential Guide to Prescription Drugs” by James W. Long, MD (1987), there are no restrictions or interactions expected with alcohol usage while taking thyroxine (i.e. Synthroid, Levothroid, Euthroid, Thyrolar, Eltroxin). FYI there are also no restrictions on food, beverages, tobacco smoking, driving, piloting, exposure to sun. Because this info is from a 10 year old book, I called my pharmacist and asked the same question. He agreed with this info, and added that Synthroid should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach, a few hours before eating. All drinking, eating, etc. should be done in moderation, of course.

This may also interest you: Thyroxine should not be taken if you’ve had an allergic reaction to it before, if you are recovering from a recent heart attack, or if you are using it to lose weight and your thyroid function is normal. There should be no side-effects if the dosage is adjusted correctly. Some possible adverse effects could include an allergic reaction, headache, changes in menstrual pattern during dosage adjustments, or (in extreme cases) increased frequency or intensity of angina in the presence of coronary artery disease. I would check with your doctor about using other drugs concurrently with thyroxine.

Personally, I enjoy drinking my own homemade wine on a regular basis – in moderation of course! I haven’t had any problems with my Synthroid prescription. So…it’s a personal choice.
