I was diagnosed with Grave’s in January of 1996. After 3 months of taking PTU (antithyroid drug) I developed a case of chemically induced hepatitis. Since then I have been getting treated with acupuncture and traditional Chinese herbs. I have just gotten some lab results back, after six months of treatment, and there is significant improvement. I am going to see my endocrinologist today for the first time in seven months, so it will be interesting to see what she has to say.

    Hi Scott and Pam,

There are 2 alternatives to RAI, although I gather they are not so popular
    outside of europe.
The first is surgery to remove all or part of the thyroid – I can’t tell
you much about that as I have never experienced it.
The second alternative is medication to block the function of the thyroid,
either to get thyroid hormone levels to a more “normal” level, or to block
the thyroid completely, in which case thyroid hormone replacement is also
given. All I can say is the medication is working for me.
Read some of the older postings for more experiences of the treatments,
and especially peoples stories on Diannes home page. Hope this helps you Pam.

    Good luck,
    Ramone
