    Hi Steve,

I doubt whether the hiatal hernia is related to the RAI. I’ve had
a hiatal hernia for years and control it with the same medication
that people take for ulcers. If I don’t take it or reallly abuse
my stomach, it hurts and feels like pain in the heart. I only know
of one person who actually had surgery to correct the hernia – most
just take a pill a day. Guess you get to add another pill to your
    routine!!!

    Good luck!

Hi Steve. I read your message about being diagnosed with a hiatal
hernia. I can assure you it is not related to GD. It is a weakness in
the muscle bands which keep your stomach down in your abdominal cavity.
It is allowing the lower esophagus and stomach to bulge upward into the
chest cavity, which means the stomach acid can cause some wicked heartburn.
I believe only the worst ones are treated with surgery. Mostly medi-
cation and diet control work. Sorry you have to deal with this too!
    Good luck!

Hi Steve. I read your message about having a hiatal hernia. I can
assure you it is not related to Grave’s. It is a weakening in the
muscles that keep your lower esophagus and stomach down in the abdominal
cavity where they belong. They are able to pouch upward into the chest
cavity due to the muscle weakness (hernia) and the stomach acid can
cause wicked heartburn. The bad ones are corrected with surgery, but
mostly I think patients are controlled with diet and medication. Sorry
you have to deal with this on top of the GD! Good luck! Barb

    Hi Steve,

I’m going up and down. I was feeling a whole lot better until last week
when I reacted to the PTU and beta blockers. Felt like I’d been a few
rounds with a heavyweight contender. They cut the PTU to 1 every other
day but don’t know if that will hold me. My labs are beginning to get
too low so that probably doesn’t help either. I’m gettin’ sick of
this whole routine! I suppose I may have to give in and do the RAI
because I have to always take the beta blockers anyway and may not
be able to keep up on the PTU.

I’m so glad you are feeling better – you had us all worried for a
while! Are you able to get out and lead a somewhat normal life now?

How much radiation did you have the first time, do you know? I had the legal dose that anyone could have (31) and be out of the hospital . They can give you a much stronger dose if you are in isolation is the hospital. I can’t remember how they measure the doseage. I went 15wks before I went hypo and I thoought I was going to go crazy, with all the different sytoms I was having. I kept asking my dr. can I do it again, maybe it didn’t take. He’d just smile at me and told me he knew it took and to be patient. I look back now, and think he probable thought I was totally crazy. I am sorry I haven’t answered your question but each of us are different in how our bodies respond. Your dr, is probably the only one to let you know if you can have another dose or not.
Hang in there, I’ll be praying for you.
    Margaret :)
