I’ve read on this BB about leg cramps, etc. after RAI – now I am
experiencing this. Woke me last night – I had to jump up and move my
leg quickly. My question is what causes this? Is it from the RAI or
is this a symptom of hyper thyroid or the beginnings of hypo? Ever
since I was diagnosed and began Tapazole I began experiencing differ-
ent muscle problems; my back began to act up until last month I had
the most powerful muscle spasm ever. Thought I was going to go out
of my mind in pain. Somehow I thought all of it was related with
Graves, but of course all the MD’s say no. I wonder. Anyway what
    does cause the cramps? Thanks!

Hi, Mary. According to my endo, the leg cramping is a product of fluctuations in thyroid hormone, and the way the muscles respond to it. I got more noticeable cramping when I went into the hypo zone after RAI. They are not constant, but appear to come and go. The most relief I’ve been able to get from them, is from a moist-heat, heating pad, which I wrap around my legs in the middle of the night when the cramping hits the hardest.

Those midnight leg cramps were so familiar–just like I used to getwhen I was pregnant. Calcium supplements helped me then, and helpme now–which makes sense to me, since I know being hyper depletesyour calcium. (Your mileage may vary.) Hyper women, it seems to me,should take calcium anyway, to reduce their increased risk ofosteoporosis.Sorry about my word crowding, I can’t figure out what’s making my postslook like that.–Abigail

My muscle cramps were bad hyper and again hypo. Calcium supplements have not helped, nor has anything else I’ve tried.

Two endos have told me it is part of thyroid myeopathy (muscle disease) that some people have more severely than others. Serious muscle weakness has been part of it for me (hyper, but especially hypo).

I consulted a new endo today, who told me some people are very sensitive to being on just the right dose of thyroid replacement and can have serious problems being just a little “off”, while others can have severe thyroid imbalances and have relatively minor problems. He raised my replacement dose and tells me he thinks I’ll be feeling normal again in a couple of months.

Severe pain I’ve had in my feet is still believed to be thyroid-related (nerve problems), that should also resolve with normal thyroid levels. He gave me a drug given to diabetics with nerve pain, to help me in the meantime.

I hope to report back that he was right. :)
