BERN, Relaxation is important, not only when your health is challenged. I’ve been meditating daily for quite a number of years, and one of the things that sent me to the docs was that I could not maintain concentration for more than a few minutes. I’m still having a problem relaxing, but only two weeks on PTU, so I hope it’ll improve. See if you can find some guided meditation audio tapes to start you off. Has anyone out there practiced skilled relaxation techniques to elicit the relaxation response ? I feel that I am relaxing, but have not been able to achieve the objective results, such as higher skin temperature. Am getting confused as to what I am supposed to be doing or feeling during a relaxation period. Have used the book, Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook. Can anyone help me?

I was just lying on the chesterfield (not an uncommon occurrence) before we go out to the market and get flowers and vegetables for the week.
I was listening to “Yanni” and his piano. I have to say that this is great music for relaxing. It is hard to think negative thoughts. It is so relaxing and easy to think of being with someone you enjoy and watching the sunset or walking through the woods and sitting by a quiet stream. My CD’s favorite are “In My Time”, Reflections of Passion, In Celebration of Life. I think it is worth getting a CD and trying.

I teach relaxation. When we are hyper, there are not enough relaxation exercises in the world to actually relax us, because we are running on excess hormones. However, relaxation is a LEARNED response, so to learn and practice it, over and over, it becomes a very useful tool. Bobbi’s post earlier reflects the usefulness of relaxation in many situations. There are many types, and they include visualization, progresssive muscle relaxation, to name just a couple. Learnn on one basic tyope, and then progress to others. Some people cannot visualize, others do not like to feel someone else is inn control. Autonomic relalxation is where you repeat the phrases to yourself in the first person — “I am relaxing my right arm…I am relaxing my left arm…etc.” There are some excellent tapes, as well as some really awful ones.
