between T4, T3 and TSH, the last one to come into normal range will be TSH, because it is associated with the pituitary gland. So it takes the pituitary gland a little longer to realize that the thyroid is no longer producing on it’s own, and crank up the TSH. You might want to have your T3 checked also, because it is typically more important than your T4, because in some GD cases, T4 stays normal all the time. T4 is the least important reading of the thyroid hormones when it comes to GD. Usually it is six weeks or so before you see the TSH start climbing.

    Good Luck,

    Hi, smorg:

Your question about having normal levels of T4 while still having a hyper TSH: First of all, the T4 readings are in a RANGE. Therefore, them just being in the normal zone do not necessarily mean that things are “normal” as perceived by your brain (pituitary). My own blood levels of hormone have been “normal” since last February or March, but the TSH only gradually moved toward normal. Secondly, there can be a distinct lag between actual blood levels and the pituitary responding. I don’t know why this is. I believe that this is why the doctors recommend that we wait six to eight weeks between blood work-ups when we are on synthetic hormone. The actual blood levels respond fairly quickly to changes in replacement hormone, but the pituitary takes a while to catch on.

    Good luck.

I will be undergoing radio active treatment for Grave’s Disease in two weeks. I would like to know if any one can tell me the side effects of the iodine, etc.? I have trouble sleeping now and I am extremely hyper. Beta blockers do not do a great job of bringing my heart rate down. It has been very frustrating. I am really tired and I am actually looking forward to the treatment.
