I have had Anxiety attacks off and on for a few years. I now take a mild antidepressant every other day to help take the edge off. I took them in the past and stopped them on my own (big mistake). Thought I was doing OK until one day driveing home I zoned out and it scared the heck out of me. After numerous tests, cat scans, EEGs etc. Doc said it was a panic attack due to stress and Graves.
Put me back on the antidepressant and have been kind of sluggish since. Have noticed more jittereness and my reflexes are really extream. The other night Jan ran her hand across my stomach and my legs jumped about 3 feet. That isn’t normal. Going to make an appointment with my endo to get my levels checked.

I suffered from panic attacks prior to being diagnosed, Debby. They always happened on airplanes, so I thought I was simply afraid of flying. I started going to a psychiatrist to get anti-anxiety meds specifically for flights. Anyway, to make a long story shorter, he began berating himself when I turned up with Graves’, saying that he SHOULD have checked my thyroid, and that once I got normalized, I would probably not experience the panic attacks again. I have taken several flights this year withn no problems — so maybe he was right.

Greeting all.
I was once very active here but our of commission for past year or so. Had my RAI back in 1993 and unfortunately have never been “normal” again. I started having depressions about 6 months after the RAI and it has been impossible to keep my TSH stable for very long and and need constant adjustments. I finally got free from the depression when I got my TSH down to about .5 or 1 (anything higher and I am a slug) Now, since the fall of 97 I have been Dx with “Anxiety Disorder” or panic attacks. Nothing like this has EVER happened to me before, even when the Graves had me hyper as all get out. I have had to turn to psychiatry in frustartion and they are trying hard to help me and also watching my thyroid MUCH more closely than my Endo ever did. So, my question is: anyone else suffer from such a disorder since they had Graves?? I do not know if it is related but only that I never had any type of emotional problems until I had my thyroid nuked. Now this is my main battle. I wonder if this had always been there and I never knew? Could it be the crazy fluctuations in my TSH with Synthroid? Maybe it will always be part of my life….at least I am thankful not to have any of the eye disease at this point, but feeling “psychiatric” is the PITTS!
-debbiejust wanted to say yes I have had about four panic attacks and they
have got to be the worst thing I have been through,it awfull, and I had never before had anything like it.barbHi Debbie:
I have suffered on and off from anxiety attacks and depression.
I did not have this problem before I had Graves’ disease. It can
be the PITTS if you let it be. I am taking a antidepressant and
it has helped me a lot. I don’t have the deep down depression that
I used to have and my anxiety attacks have been very few. The
important part is that you are not alone. I think that this
can be very common. Don’t let it get out of hand, seek help.
best to you….Carolyn -
