Hi Karen! Most of your questions about PTU should be answered by your doctor. If you forgot to ask at your appointment, you can call the office and ask the nurse. The PTU starts working immediately, but it can take 3-6 weeks to use up the stored hormone in your system.

Go to the NGDF homepage and you will find a link to recommended reading material that will give you the information you’re looking for about thyroid tests and such.

Glad you found us and hope you feel better soon.

I want everyone to know how wonderful the assistance has been since joining the Group! I was just diagnosed two weeks ago, and everyone has been very wonderful and helpful including Jake and also Nancy Patterson. Your respones were very helpful and also very timely in my time of need, and I wantt to say THANK YOU very much to ALL!!( Nancy also tried calling me at home, which was really wonderful)THANK YOU ALL!!

I seem to be doing OK. MY Endo. has me on 200mg of PTU daily, ( 100mg every 12 hours) and wants to see me in 4 weeks. QUESTION: How long does/should it take
before the PTU kicks in? My heart rate seems to be coming down very slowly,(it’s been 2 weeks on the PTU) and I’m in the mid-high 80’s and 90’s. Als0, are there any side effects I should look out for while on PTU??? MY urine was VERY yellow
today.. and I’m a little concerned?? Also, I seem to feel a little sleepy at times?? Are there any foods that are good to eat to help with the thyroid, and which are the good ones to stay away from?? Also, is it better to take the PTU on an empty stomach, or with food?. Thanks, Karen

In a recent post it was stated that one could become allergic to one of the ATDs if taken off then reintroduced. Is this common? Is this more common at a higher dose? I was allegic to TAP put on PTU without any problems. Was taken off PTU for 7 months then reintroduced – once again no problem.

I’m curious since I’m only on 50mg/day and doc wants to reduce meds. I’d rather stay on if thyroid levels are stable – don’t want to take the risk. Thanks

I was originally on Tapazole and had an allergic reaction to that. I was switched over to PTU and had no problem with that for a year. Then my Dr. took me off meds to see if I would be in remission. In a couple weeks, I was back to hyper again and Dr. put me back on PTU. Within two months of being back on PTU, I experienced an allergic reaction to PTU. I didn’t understand how I could be allergic after having been on it for a year, but the Dr. said that is common when placed back on meds. Hope this helps you.
