I was diagnosed with Graves almost 8 years ago, I’m still having issues with gaining weight. I was diagnosed just after my son was born, I opted for the radioactive iodine, it has been a very rocky road since my treatment. I stopped taking my medication so I could go into the United States Army and gained 65 pounds bringing me up to 168. But the side effects where almost unbearable. I saw my doctor shortly after I returned to my hometown and she put me back on synthroid. The weight still seemed to be just melting off. Within a year I dropped back down to 100 pounds. My weight has been a roller coaster since then I would gain 20lbs and then drop 30. I’ve done everything from protien shakes to changing my eating habits. I’m now sitting at 105lbs, but I’m 5’7" so I look like a rail. My doctor has even changed my dose of synthroid. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really feel unhealthy at this weight. People can’t believe I’ve had 2 children, and I’m tired of the comments about me being so skinny…….

105 pounds for a 5’7" person is way too thin.

Get a second opinion from another endo.

You don’t mention your thyroid hormone levels ~ it’s possible that your synthroid is being given in too high a dose, which would render you hyperthyroid and weight/strength loss issues would result.

Please do not ever stop taking synthroid ~ the RAI destroyed your thyroid, and your body must have thyroid hormone to survive. That’s what the synthroid provides. A higher/lower dose may be required, but please do not ever stop taking it (or at least some form of synthetic thyroid hormone replacement).
