    Hi Melissa,

It’s extremely rare, but we have had people post here before who have had thyroid tissue regenerate to some degree following surgery. Odd that you have "random" thyroid tissue traveling in your body, you are special, aren’t you? <img decoding=” title=”Wink” /> Again, it’s heard of, but extremely rare. Any uptake is unusual for someone who thought they had no thyroid tissue left, so the GD antibodies could be affecting you again. Any tissue is susceptible to antibody attack. Have you done labs to see where your blood levels are?

    Melissa,

Like Ski says, it is extremely are, but certainly can happen. It is not unusual (in those rare cases) that it be growing sort of "down your neck". You may be looking at some RAI at this point. The thyroid tissue that is growing is now putting out hormones. If you are also taking Synthroid, you will be getting it from two sources. Your doctor will be wanting to do some testing–for sure.

Good afternoon everyone. I just stumbled upon your wonderful board and was hoping you all had any insights into my situation. I was diagnosed with Graves 02/06. I had all of the symptoms, out of control emotions, always hot, flushed skin, fatigue, terrible tremors, shortness of breath, my resting heart rate was 140 and weight loss to the point of looking malnutritioned. Blood tests results (03/06) were T3 Total >800, T4 Free 5.7, TSH Ultrasensitive <0.03. Thyroid uptake scan was 25%. I also had enlarged lymph nodes all throughout my neck, and an anterior mediastinal mass was found. I was told that it was directly related to my G.D. I was on the PTU and propranolol to no avail and because of this chest mass I elected to have a total thyroidectomy. 12/16/06. Biopsies came back neg, and the mass was found to be ectopic thyroid tissue not connected to my thyroid. Following T.T. I became hypoparathyroid as well as hypothyroid. Now, 2 years later I am starting to get crazy thoughts again, I can’t concentrate which is the same way I used to be. I have slight tremors, fatigue, shortness of breath and my resting heart rate is 90. I just had a followup uptake scan which shows multiple sites of residual thyroid activity with 16% uptake including activity in chest mass. The radiologist doing the scan kept saying "Are they doing these tests because your thyroid grew back?" And I was like "My thyroid grew back?!" Can that happen? I know a T.T. cannot remove 100% of your thyroid, but does it mean that if there is some left that it will just start to grow back? And 16% uptake means that there is some activity, right? I am so confused. I was led to believe that no thyroid = no G.D. However that doesn’t seem to be the case with me lol. I must be a mutant lol. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and responses,
    Melissa

Good afternoon. Yes, we have done some labs and all show Hypo. TSH 40.99, I remember my T3 was 68 but cannot remember T4. I don’t have them with me today, but will post once I do. I think what has me most concerned is this mass has been there before G.D. diagnosis. I sure did give the radiologists something to talk about though  . I just scheduled a f/u with my endo 04/17 so I will hopefully get some answers then. I will keep you guys posted.
Thank you both for your help!

    Melissa
