I don’t think exposure to the sun can make the TED symptoms accelerate, but it’s definitely an irritant, as is the wind outdoors and (right now) the pollen. You may want to get those wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes more when you’re out there. You shouldn’t have to stay in, though.

It’s finally getting sunny here in the Midwest. My question…

Can being in the sun have a negative impact on TED, other than discomfort? Can it make it progress more? I do notice my eyes hurting in the sun, as well as in the flourescent lights at work. I always have my sunglasses and eye drops at hand, but still seem to get headaches.

Just wondering because baseball and track season are upon us- and soon the pool. We are an outdoors family – hopefully that won’t have to change with TED.

    Thanks (as always),
    Emily

Ski is right the wrap around sunglasses are a blessing to us. I even had a pair of clear ones that I wore at night and in windy places to help keep my eyes from getting dry.

They work great and when used with eye drops they help to keep the eyes moist and really cut down on dry eyes.

    Emily,

My eye doc said the extra fluid around the eye causes light sensitivity. For me, the light sensitivity also started migraines, so I invested in GOOD sunglasses with UV protection. That helps a lot and I’m not bashful about wearing them when I need them, even inside sometimes!
