Hi,
I wouldn’t worry too much about your throat unless it doesn’t improve over a few days. We were told that signs of agranulocytosis (when the bone marrow suddenly stops making white blood cells that fight infections) were persistant coughs & sore throat of flu-type symptoms which are severe or do not improve over the course of a few days, as a normal cold etc would. As your kids have been unwell it’s likely that you are coming down with the same thing. Do however be vigilant, if you have any shortnes of breath, unusual bruising or red spots, or feel more unwel than you would usually with a cold etc get in touch with your physician. Also, it’s worth mentioning the sore throat etc when you see him on tuesday anyway.
My daughter has had a couple of sore throats since begining her therapy but they’ve cleared up fine after 24-48 hours so try not to panic (easy to say, I know;-))
Hope you are feeling better soon.
Take care,
W xEmily,
I wouldn’t worry about it right now. If you come down with a fever, I would definitely call your doctor and let him or her know prior to getting your results. You may be told to stop temporarily. You could just be getting what your kids had, which happened to me when I was on Methimazole. It can make it easier for you to get sick. Keep an eye on it, and keep us updated.
Jody
I’d say you need to break out the old reliable Jewish Penicillin(what we call chicken stew for a cold) and get to work on what your kids gave ya. (Thanks kids, hugs and kisses to them! LOL).
This is also allergy season and I am JUST getting over my soar throat after 5 weeks with it. I am not amused but happy it’s over. Congestion and headache and coughing due to post nasal drip I can’t even feel but dr. said it was there and a lot of it.
Queen is right, make sure you call dr. if you get a fever just so they know. It’s common with any cold but make sure they know just in case.I know it’s spring but keep your throat covered up when outside and stay warm. Windows shut in case it’s allergies causing it. Lots of fluids because whether it is allergies or a cold either way fluids will help flush it all out. Sips of warm/hot water instead of tea if you prefer is just as good as tea if you dont’ like tea. Prop yourself up at night in case it’s post nasal drip so you don’t choke/cough. I didn’t cough all day but as soon as I would get into bed and lay down boy I’d cough, this horrible non productive allergy/post nasal drip cough. YUCK!!
Stop working to hard. Keep It Simple Silly (KISS) !!!!! Paper plates, plastic utensils, or use dish washer, if you start feeling really bad break out the take out menu if your budget allows for it.
If you have washer/dryer at home ONLY do ONE load a day. Wash, dry, fold and put away one a day. NO MORE then that unless someone else is folding and putting away. You will burn out while taking the meds and not feeling well at the same time. Hand wash important things that MUST be washed if not and you don’t have a washer/dryer save it for the laundromat.Bottom line!!! TAKE IT EASY. I know what a concept being a mom but you NEED to feel better and running around after kids doing dishes, laundry and dinner isn’t going to help you feel better. Take it slow, delegate duties and if they don’t like it print the No whining sign I have in my kitchen and put it up for a while lol.
I hope this re assures you that you aren’t alone and that you are still a woman that has to look after herself even if you feel you are a mom 1st. (((((((((((((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Thanks – again this site (and all of you) really is a blessing to me.
Mamabear, I have already limited myself to one load of laundry a day – and that’s really helped a lot. I didnt realize how much I was running up and down to the basement for laundry. You have some great suggetions. I can tell you’re a good, patient, caring mom. ” title=”Smile” />
Thanks Jody an catsmum for your re-assurance as well. I’m less anxious about it and will watch out for a fever. In days past, I wouldn’t have thought anything about getting something from my kids (or other kids – I’m a teacher, I haven’t worked in a classroom since my kids were born, but I work in a tutoring center 2 nights a week.)
Happy Sunday.

Hi Emily,
Ok here I go again! I have had problems with both carbimazole and PTU with low WBC – yes just my luck ! After being on carbimazole for 4 years with no problems I had the TS then was called from the hosptial to say STOP the meds your WBC is very low – any lower and they were taking me in for barrier nursing. Please try not to worry as they told me to get my bloods done in a fortnight and just stay away from people who are unwell – hard like you when you have kids etc…
I wasn’t allowed back on carbimazole so was told to start PTU however my WBC is hovering on the normal range and dipping sometimes so my endo told me he is relieved that the op is going to happen as there is nothing else they can do for me meds wise and long term they wouldn’t want my my WBC to be as low especially when I return to work.
So yes you sound like me in a lot of ways. I remember the first time I had to start the carbimazole and I read the attached leaflet etc.. about low WBC etc… and then stupidly (for me) I looked it all up on the internet and just went into floods of tears. Now my sis heard about this and called saying she had been on it for years and was fine and I was like you saying – yeah but I know my lucky! I got very cocky over the last few years but after the TS I said to my hubby I bet my WBC starts to lower – he was dumbfounded when I got the call from the hospital…..
So the moral of the story is…….try not to worry, if this happens they can deal with it and even in extreme cases they would hospitalise you – like they intended to do with me. If you are concerned call up and ask your endo secretary for your results. There is no harm and its your health.
I write this to you calmly – yet was out today at a church event and sat the full time taking my pulse! ” title=”Very Happy” />
Take care

Ok, I’m back with another question about if I should worry…thanks for being patient with me. ” title=”Smile” />
I’m taking methimazole, which I know has a rare side effect of affecting my WBC count. (In my mind, rare means it would probably happen to me – just my luck.) Anyway, I’m starting today with a sore throat. Both of my children are getting over colds with cough, congestion, and sore throat so I’m assuming this is not the kind of sore throat to worry about, but I need some re-assurance.
I just had blood drawn yesterday and they are doing a complete blood count on it – that was already part of the order as I didn’t have a sore throat yesterday. I see my endo on Tuesday for results. Is it OK to wait to talk to him about it then?
On a side note, he upped my beta blocker to 75 mg because of the tremors that came back last week. It’s normal to see progress and then feel like you’re back where you started? How frustrating!!!
Trying to have a good day – hope you all do too.
Emily
You’re welcome ” title=”Wink” /> .
Just don’t ask my kids about me being patient…not sure they would agree! LOLWhen I became sick I made sure that everyone wash their hands when coming in from out side. The store, school doesn’t matter, everyone washes their hands and that is that. Frequently wash door knobs, light switches and toilet handles as well.
While out and about when you have to meet people, keep handiwipes (antibacterial) on you or alcohol wipes so you can wipe your hands after shaking hands with people if you dont have a bathroom available to wash properly. I know it sounds a bit over done but when you are sick you have to do it because our immune systems aren’t as strong.

Hyperm,
I think you and I think (and worry) alot alike. It’s nice knowing I’m not the only one.
I took my pulse in church several times today as well – coincecendtly, it was fine has not been above 80 (usually it”s 72) since I started absessing over it a few weeks ago. ” title=”Razz” />

I am somewhat like you and hyperm (hello there buddy ol’ pal?) I am one of those people that always seem to fall in the SMALL percentage.
If every one is sick then don’t fret; but if you get the kind of sore throat where you can hardly swallow and things look a lil sci fi in your throat..you may wanna get it checked.Once I thought maybe I had strep and so I went to the ER. The doctor had to catch his breath because there were actual blisters in my throat. At the time I didn’t know what it was and neither did he. I read later in a medical book that sometimes when the WBC get low that PTU can become overwhelming to your system. I was trully blessed because he only wrote me a script for pain and sent me home.
I later found out what he was suppose to do was complete take me off my meds, admit me, and give me some kind of antibiotic … So keep your eye on it..
ButtamamaThanks – sore throat is gone, only some sniffles left. I’m usually not one to get sick – even if I’ve been the caretaker for sick kids – or I’d just get something in passing. Luckily, my immune system seemed to work OK this time.
