Thanks Mamabear for the reminders…they are always helpful. We can’t help take care of our loved ones, if we arn’t taking care of ourselves. When I got my Dx, one of the first things I did was go see an eye specialist, just so I could get a baseline. That way if I start to develop anything, they would have something to go by. I also have nagged my PA to the point of being a pain in the butt about my vitamin/mineral levels…since they can be so off in Graves patients, and all the other meds I take. She was contributing most of my symtoms to my stroke…when in reality….I had very low vita d levels…osteopenia…and Graves, so other medical problems could be thought of to a doc or PA as because of those things, and masking other things. My Graves was actually found by accident. Listen to your own bodies, and be your own advocates. Generally docs don’t look for zebras, so if you think you have one, point out the stripes!!!!!!!
I know it is hard to adjust to having Graves’ disease. We find ourselves bogged down with so many things and then add a spouse, kids and even animals and other loved ones you have to take care of and you have a good hot mess on your hands. We do adjust although it takes time but we tend to forget something very important. Our health. I know funny i should mention this since you would think that if we are at the dr’s office for our thyroid we would be getting checked out and clean bill of health all the time BUT WE DON’T. So don’t forget to get your annual exams EVERYONE men and women.
Men remember you not only should get your annual you should your yearly urologist check up and make sure there is nothing going on. Men get cancer too so please don’t neglect that.
Women don’t forget to get your annual exam and also your yearly ObGyn/Gyn exam. And of course make sure that you get a mammogram shortly after the dr. gives you the slip that says to go get it.
No one should forget their eyes. We do tend to forget them if we are in remission(i dont due to a very strict Optometrist lol), and if there is nothing wrong with our eyesight we forget it completely.
Remember to make those phone calls. They are as important as your next Endocrinologist exam.
And I am a pain in the butt…think of me as the ….um…. Mamabear LOL -
