Here are a few…
Weight Control – Supposedly, only a “small” percentage of people gain weight while hyper, but it seems from this and other boards that there are a lot of us who are hyper or euthyroid and are still having issues. Our doctors seem to assume that it’s our eating habits that have changed…but I really believe there is more going on. On a related note, it would also be great to hear more about optimizing nutrition while dealing with autoimmune and thyroid disease.
Related to weight issues, but I would love to get nutrition/exercise suggestions that will help with re-building lean muscle mass once euthyroid status is achieved.
Complementary Medicine – Nice breakout session last year…I would like to hear more on this topic.
Stress/Coping Skills – I attended a seminar earlier this year that was sponsored by the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association. One of the speakers was from Hicksville, NY — he gave a fabulous presentation on "Coping With An Autoimmune Disease". The information was excellent, but he put a humorous spin on the whole issue. I believe I still have his contact info if there is any interest.
ATD dosing, remission, and long-term use – It seems like many endos withdraw meds shortly after a euthyroid state is achieved with ATDs to “see” if remission will occur. Kind of like throwing spaghetti against the wall to see if it sticks. Many doctors and patients seem to be unaware of the importance of bringing antibody levels down before stopping drug therapy. I would be curious to hear from an endo who has successfully used “block and replace” therapy (combining ATDs with thyroid replacement) to reduce antibody levels. Finally, last year, there was an interesting exchange between a presenter and an attendee about long-term use of ATDs…I would be interested to hear more about both sides on this issue.
I’m sure I will think of more as soon as I hit “submit”.
For every conference, we seek the ideas and suggestions of those who will be attending regarding the topics they would like to see covered. For you who have attended before, you know how packed things can be! Please let us know–the sooner the better–what you would like to hear about.
It sounds like we need to look for a Dermatologist, for one.
There may be subjects you’d like to have that aren’t specifically related to Graves’, but fit into the greater picture.
I second the complementary medicine.
As well and stress/coping skills also things to deal with anxiety. Mine is worse since GD.
Exercise and strengthing. What you can do while you can’t exercise (i.e. when levels are high) and what do to for strengthening your muscles.I am very interested in the stress/anxiety issue – not only in their relation to Graves Disease, but in terms of autoimmune disease in general. I’m interested in why my body developed an autoimmune illness, why it’s so prevalent for women, and if my lack of "coping skills" predisposed me to developing such a disorder.
Another one i thought of….Thyroid 101. I think it would be great to have an anatomy and physiolog lesson on the thyroid and what it does for our body.
Here is what I see so far:
Dermatologist
Nutrition (general and weight control)
Exercise (strengthening and regaining muscle tone)
Complementary therapies (I may need some clarification) This usually means meditation, exercise, massage, yoga, etc.)
Stress (Management, and/or what is it actually?)
Coping skills (where did they go, and how can I find them again?) Send NY address, please
Endocrinologist(s)
ATD’s
Block and replace
Thyroid 101 (what IS a thyroid, anyway?)
**My dream: An Ad campaign "Got Thyroid?" with a thyroid stuck somewhere on the
body, followed by an explanation of what the thyroid does, and why it is important to check it.
Pediatric and/or Maternal/Child Endo/ObGynHave you registered for the conference? The Hotel? The Hotel is totally AWESOME. The rooms are usually $450.00 – Our price $150.00
Peter is working on some really special things–can’t tell you yet, but if they happen, you will be REALLY IMPRESSED!

Yes, that is what I was thinking…also there are certain herbal supplements that some people claim can treat hyperthyroidism. Although these results have not been supported with large-scale research, it would be interesting to know what these herbs can/can’t do for Graves.
Nancy Patterson wrote:Stress (Management, and/or what is it actually?)All of the above, but mostly management. ” title=”Very Happy” />

Thanks!
KimberlyWe are in the downhill run of conference planning. We still have room and time for your suggestions. Please review the list above and give us your input.
I wish I could attend the conference but the cost is to much for us since I’m having to travel to other states for Ava’s medical care, but thought that this one is also something that would be great . An eye specialist.
ValarieWe have a couple of eye specialists, three endocrinologists, a nutritionist, a psychiatrist, 2 support leaders for families, an endo for neonatal Graves’–that’s all I can remember right now.
I would definitely like to know more on eye issues at the conference.
Nancy,,, I honestly am a bit nervous about coming… my husband has offered to drive us there from Canada… however, right now I am very light sensitive – hat and dark glasses and i really have trouble talking to people since I have double vision – can you provide me with some encouragement–
LakeviewLakeview,
You will NOT be alone with these issues, I promise! There is no better group to be with when you are feeling down, I can tell you that for a certain fact.
Dear Lakeview,
You will find SO MANY people who understand. I go nowhere without my extra-dark sunglasses, have another-additional- wrap around pair in the glove compartment for those terrible glaring days. I have poured cream into the "wrong" cup in nice restaurants, signed important papers in the wrong place, turned the corner in the hall too soon…you name it, I have done it (and sometimes still do). If you cna get there, you will really be glad that you came!
Take care,
Oh man after seeing that your going to have an Endo for Neonatal Graves I so really wish I could attend. Is there a way that it will be recorded and possiably veiwed on the site after it is all over?
