I developed hives too but I had been on Methimazole (Tapazole) for about a year. I also became pregnant at the same time. We don’t know if it was the Methimazole or the pregnancy or somehow the combination. I’m sure we will never know. I was switched to PTU. I had liked the convienience of the one a day dose of Methimazole vs multiple doses of PTU but it worked out fine.
I’m currently taking the generic form of tapazole………I’ve been on it for almost 4 weeks now and for about the last week and a half I develop hives and itch. It’s always in a different place then the day before and when you look at the center you can see a noticeable whelp. Sorry if I spelled that wrong. I have been taking Benadryl tablets with little help. Did anyone else experience this? If so, what did you doctor say? When I looked it up online it said that this could be a serious side effect. I will be in one place or multiple places at one time…….ex: back and stomach, the tops of both feet, thighs and calves. It’s driving me crazy!!! Please tell me I’m not alone and this will pass……..I go to the doctor wednesday for a follow up and don’t know if I should make the appointment sooner or if it’s ok to wait.
Thanks so much for everyone’s responses and most of all support,
MichelleAnybody else have any problems with this?
You should call your doctor today, please do not wait, the same thing happened to me, I had one break out a week after starting the Methimazole, then three weeks another rash that started with a hot red face chest and arms. My doctor took me right off the Methimazole. I have gone two weeks with no medication, started the beta blocker, but am gaining fluid. I have restarted the PTU today, only a small amount due to my problems with the Methimazole. Please call you doctor and let us know what they suggest.

Well, I went to see the doctor today and he didn’t seem concerned about it at all. He have me some zyrtec to take once a day but was more concerned that my heart rate was 120. So as soon as the pharmacy calls me back, I start on some medicine to lower my heart rate. He told me to come back to see him in 1 week. Is 120 really THAT HIGH?
Hi MIchelle!
Is it 120 resting when you take it at home, too? I hope you find relief from the hives- I’ve had them BAD before and know they are no fun. Zyrtec was what helped me, didn’t make them go away but did make them less itchy. What did they give you to bring your HR down?
Take care ” title=”Smile” />
LacieActually I took my heart beat at rest at home 3 times and got between 150 and 170. And my doctor checked it with the blood pressure machine and manually. I’m taking Propranaolol ER 80MG Capsules……..the generic form of Inderal LA 80 MG. Hopefully this helps.
The propranolol should help and I think it works quickly, so by now your HR should be lowering. Hope you feel better today!
If you’re allergic to tapazole, it can be dangerous. Some people find that as their dosage decreases, their allergic reaction goes away, but in other people it can escalate and even end up in anaphylactic shock (like a bee sting allergy) where you can’t breathe. I’m surprised your doctor was not concerned at all that you are exhibiting an allergic reaction.
I had Zyrtec prescribed before anyone knew I had Graves’, and it made ALL my symptoms worse, so keep that in mind.
And yes, 120 is an extremely high heart rate. I really hope you’re having some success getting that down. It’s not good for you, and the accelerated heart rate can lead to irregular heart beats that can get out of hand.
I haven’t checked my heart rate lately because I’ve been running the roads…….I’m gonna sit down for a while and see what it is. However, I took the zyrtec last night and can report that I have NOT itched at all today!!! Wooo hoooo!! What a relief! It was driving me nuts! I also just took my second dose of the heart rate medicine….sorry didn’t feel like getting up to see the name. I will report back shortly and let everyone know how my heart rate is after 24 hours on the medicine. I want to thank everyone for the replies!! Everyone is soooo supportive!! Thanks!!! ” title=”Very Happy” />
Yippee, Michelle! You sound like you are feeling much better! ” title=”Very Happy” />
