I am in my fourth month of "normal" range levels on Methimazole after being diagnosed with Graves almost a year ago.
Since my "normal ranges", I have had several yeast infections ( four in five months) as well as the flu and a bacterial infection in my ears that knocked me out for two weeks. Is that typical? Is there anything I can do about it? Obviously my immune system is still too busy attacking my thyroid to fight other things. <img decoding=” title=”Wink” />
The connection with iron is that I looked back in my journal and saw that I had switched back to a regular women’s vitamin around the time I began getting frequent recurring yeast infections and my other illnesses. I have gone back to the GNC Ultra Women’s Mega with no iodine or iron. I know I need the iron, so am wondering if I need to take an iron supplement or just leave it alone for now. I am regularly borderline anemic and have been my whole life, so know the iron is important.

Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

HI do you know what your ferratin (iron) level is? I am like you always borderline and at one stage my ferratin was only 4 – it was not a good situation as I was like that for months and thought they were going to have to starting injecting me to try and get it up. Then with my last baby they thought I may have needed a blood transfusion. However, I come on and off iron as too much is very dangerous – though don’t think my levels have ever gotten that far lol.

I know that at one stage I changed from the typical ferrous sulphate tablets to a liquid solution and really bad tachycardia – so I imagine that perhaps you are taking a reaction to a different form? I am not sure but your GP should be able to advise you – it could all be in the coating of the tablet etc…

I would consult your GP as aneamia is such a common illness and they will be used to people having reactions to different types of meds for it.

    HTH xx

JLW – I would make sure your endo knows about the frequent infections on the med – it can influence the immune system, so if you are experiencing a change it may be prudent to let him know. C
