What a wealth of information – amazing how the assumption is made because they are the same meds that they will have the exact same active ingredients! I bet there are loads of people out there who are in the same boat and their GP’s don’t have a clue about any of that.

Its like when I when to the dentist just before diagnosis and when they gave me the jag to numb my mouth my feet were practically hitting off the ceiling like Micheal Flatley in the Riverdance    . I didn’t know at the time my GD had become active and therefore shouldn’t have had anything with adrenaline. I then got a sticker on my notes saying I had to get the injection without adrenaline for any further procedures. I didn’t even know that injection existed ( my uncle is a dentist) and I bet there are thousands of people out there who feel awful with that jag never mind visiting a dentist! its all cost effective as I am sure that 99% of the population would rather have an andrenaline free injection… Over here its cost cutting on the NHS!

You have truly helped a lot of people just by that research! Well done you!! xx

I am the one who got a rash just last week after taking methimazole for 5 days. I am off it as of now and the rash and itching hasn’t gotten any worse. I am lucky to have access to a drug information center through my work. I got the inactive ingredients list for the generic I took last year and the one I am taking this year. I also got the inactive ingredients for the brand name. I took the first one for almost a year and had no reaction. This new batch was from a different company. The one inactive in it that the pharmacist said causes a lot of reported allergic reactions, povidone, is in the new generic version I took. She told me that if I had taken this same active ingredient for that long last year then it is most likely that I have an allergy to one of the inactives in the other generic version. If I have to go back on methimazole again I will ask for the brand name that doesn’t have this povidone in it.

I found out the manufacturer of my generic by putting the name of the drug and the marking on the tablet into google images. I guess the pharmacist at the drug store where I bought it might told me had I called. By the way it’s the same one I got the other version at a year ago. Drug stores buy what’s cheapest or the best deal for them on generics so the companies change often.

I hope this post helps others.

The generics do have the same ACTIVE ingredient in them (that’s required by law in USA) but it’s the fillers, colors, binders etc. the INACTIVE things that change from company to company.

I am taking the Generic also and developed Hives about 3 weeks into it. I would itch a few places, then a red raised area would appear like a welp. I started taking Benadryl until I couldn’t take it anymore. My doctor put me on Zyrtec and for the most part it has cleared up the hives. Occassionally, they will show up when it’s getting close to 24 hours since I took the zyrtec so I just go ahead and take that dose a little early and in about an hour I’m good.

    Michelle,
I haven’t got hives. I have little red bumps that really do itch. In some places it looks like scaly patches too. It feels rough. It has spread to my arms but I don’t think my legs are getting any worse. I don’t like benadryl so haven’t tried that.I have been taking OTC claritin for a long time so I’d have to stop that. Did you try any topical creams or anything that helped?

Have you considered short term cortisone cream from your GP to clear it up quickly? Or aqua cream? xx

    Hyperm,
Don’t know what aqua cream is. I’m guessing it’s a UK thing. Do you know what the ingredients are?
