Josie,
I am the one who wrote the post about the inactive ingredient in the methimazole that probably gave me my rash. I don’t know if it was in your generic but I do know it’s not in the brand name. If you have to go back on it I’d definitely ask for a different formulation. You can look on your bottle to see if the manufacturer is listed there. It was on one of mine. You can get your doctor to call the local drug information center to find out all the ingredients if you can’t locate them online. Some companies put their formulations up and some don’t.I am still itching from my rash about a week and half after it started. I have no idea how long it will last. I hope it’s not long. The pharmacist at the store on Sunday said that benadryl would probably help. I am already taking Claritin and didn’t want to change antihistamines at this point. I can’t be sleepy during the day from benadryl. I am just using cream now.
I’m on the wrong end of the country to help you out with an endo. I know some of the other big web sites like the endocrinologist associations list doctors who are members but that doesn’t tell you if they are patient friendly.
Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Everyone!
I’m so happy to have found this board. I just want to thank everyone for contributing and sharing your stories.
I was diagnosed with Graves Disease/hyperthyroidism about a month ago. I started taking Methimazole (generic Tapozole) 3 weeks ago. About 3 days ago, I started developing an itch, which within a day turned into full blown hives all over my body. It was the absolute worst! It’s been 3 days since I stopped taking the meds, and I am waiting to hear from my doctor about what to do next. The thing is, despite Zyrtec and prescription antihistamines (from the urgent care doctor), I’m still itching! And though the patches of rash from Friday have disappeared, but there are new ones now (not as bad) on Monday.
So my questions:
1. I read a posting about a filler in the generic Methimizole that could be causing the reaction. Does anyone no anything more about this? Should I ask my doctor for a brand name prescription?
2. For those you who have had this reaction to Methimazole, how long did your rash last?
3. Does anyone have recommendations for a good endocrinologist in the San Francisco Bay Area? My doctor is okay, but he lacks good bedside manner and I always get the feeling that he and his receptionist are always rushing me off the phone.Any other comments or suggestions are welcome.
Thank you so much!
Josie
thank you ewmb!
the hives went away completely after a week. my doctor didn’t want to put me on the brand name version & possibly get another reaction – it could be dangerous.
i’m on propylthiouracil now, 3 times a day. so far no rash.
crossed fingers although i don’t feel it’s working as well as the Tap (feeling hot again these days!)
Glad to know that you are feeling better. My rash took about two-three weeks to totally disappear. I am rash free on my brand name and hoping I won’t be taking it for long. The PTU does ebb faster than the methimazole so make sure you are exact with your timing so you don’t get so many ups and downs. That was one reason I changed from PTU several years ago.

how exact is exact?
i’m taking it at 7/8am, then 3/4 am, then 11/12pm. so almost every 8 hours.
Just the same time frame apart every day was what I was told. So as close to the 8 hours apart as you can make it.

Hi josie,
sorry to hear about your rash fromt he methimazole/tapozole, however be careful with the ptu as well. I had a reaction to both, same thing rash/hives, it took about three weeks for it to go away all togther. Take care of your self.

So sorry that you are going through this……..for me it was horrible. I was taking benadryl then went to the doctor because it got so bad that I felt I couldn’t hardly function. He put me on zyrtec and told me i could also take the benadryl as needed. It cleared it up for me. Sorry that didn’t work for you. I hope you find something that works, keep me informed if you do. The other doctor in the practice that I go to seemed concerned about me taking the zyrtec and the tapazole together long term. But, she didn’t tell me why!
Hi, I was reading your old posts about itching on tapazole. I read you switched to PTU. Are you still on it? How’s it going? I also was on tapazole (the generic) for three weeks and developed the excruciating itching. My doctor said it probably wasn’t the generic fillers and didn’t have me try to name brand either. I switched to PTU and also agree that I don’t feel it’s working as well. I know I have to give it time. I just wondered how you were doing. Thanks.
