Hi Amy! I’m sorry about you having to seclude yourself. That must be tough with a one year old. I can relate to the hand over your throat feeling, too. I felt better in my second week and then worse now in the third. Hoping that is a good sign, but not sure what will happen next with this crazy disease. How did you find out that you have Graves’? Hang in there, it has to get better. <img decoding=” title=”Smile” />

3 weeks out and my throat is sore. It has been sore on and off since the RAI, but just very mild and only occasionally. The past few days it has been a bit more sore and is sticking around instead of coming and going like before. It feels dry and scratchy and discomfort on swallowing. Also it seems to correllate with a worsening of hyper symptoms. I do sometimes get a little allergies, but usually stuffy nose comes along with that and I do not have that or any other allergic symptoms. I researched it some and found "days to weeks" following RAI that this could happen, but other sites just said "a day or two" after. Anybody else notice this? My dosage was small, and from what I read it does say that this could mean I have a slower path to eu/hypo- so maybe my sore throat is just kinda late? I seem to remember my Grandma having scratchy throat for a really long time (a month?) after her RAI. I will have to ask her.

I’m trying not to let myself get discouraged but it sucks to go to bed every night hoping tomorrow will be better and then nothing changes. Body is turning to jello. Sore throat makes me want to eat to soothe it. I went from eating over 3000 calories a day when I was running to now under 1500 and still seem to be gaining weight. Sorry, that was my whine for the day.

And one more question- can I eat shellfish? tunafish? Seems like my doctor said not to eat it in the couple days before rai, but I can’t remember anything about after. Anybody know?

    Hi, Runlacie:

The reason you were told not to eat shellfish, tuna, etc. in the days prior to RAI was to try to leave space inside thyroid cells for the iodine in the RAI. If we ingest too much iodine, there will be no place for the RAI to settle in the thyroid.

So, since it has been a while since your treatment, any RAI that did not make it into your thyroid has been eliminated from the body. And eating those foods should not have an adverse effect.

If you want to be on the safe side, talk with your endo’s office.

    Wishing you good luck,

Hi Bobbi ! Thanks for that info. Especially since I wasn’t thinking about it and had a tuna salad yesterday!
