Hi… I have been sleeping with an eye mask that I actually got on an airline flight once… I really like it … this kind can be purchased at a luggage – travel store… it is cloth with ties to keep it on.
Otherwise I also have a mask that I purchased to soothe my eyes in the day that I can put in the frig… that is more of a beauty mask and is plastic.
    Hope this helps..

    Hi there

I just bought an ice pack that I keep in the freezer and when things get bad with my eyes I use the frozen ice pack which greatly improves the swelling. So if I’m going out somehwere special the ice packs come out as part of my "beauty" regimen!

What I find works best for the eyes is drops. Not the regular drops either although they do help with luprication. I make a solution with honey and ice water and I use an empty "visine" bottle to apply it to my eyes. It stings like hell but really improves the appearance and general irritation in my eyes. I asked my doctor if it was ok to do this and he said it was. You just take a large tablespoon on organic honey and mix it with about three tablespoons of bottled water. Once again I use an old eyedrops bottle to apply to my eyes, plus the bottle is a good storage option if you make a small batch of the stuff.

I also just found a new treatment which is made by a Dr. Shultz. It is called "bright eyes" . I just started using it about a week ago and I’m almost afraid to say it, but I think that the swelling is actually going down. I’ve been using the drops about three times a day and my left eye (only one of my eyes is affected) looks a lot better a the moment. The drops contain all natural herbs and cayenne pepper and OMG burns like crazy for a few minutes. Right now the pain is worth it but only time will tell if this stuff works long term.

Hope this helps you. Good luck.

Hi, I’d like advice please on eye masks. Recently diagnosed with hyperthyroid, haven’t been tested for Grave’s yet, but have the bulging eyes. If an eye mask will help then I’m all for it. I’ve got no idea what I’m really looking for though. It’s not just one of those sleep masks, right? I don’t know if my eyelids close all the way when I sleep or not. I’ve been using moisturizing non-preservative eye drops several times a day. Is it one of those ‘beauty’ gel eye masks? Or the ‘beauty’ masks that say they help with ‘puffiness’ or circles under the eyes? On line, I’ve seen masks, or goggle looking eye coverings, that include moisture (just water?) for the eye balls themselves. Is that it? My opthomologist hasn’t recommeded anything…. My beauty supply store didn’t know what I was talking about… Please let me know maybe the right terminology? a brand name? If possible a website or other purchasing info. Thank you, Lorraine

I struggle to find things to soothe my eyes — not sure if I dare try the honey option! I tried a travel eye mask, but just found it made my eyes feel hot and dry. So, I would certainly appreciate recommendations.

I have tried a few masks but found that the best treatment for my eyes has been a hot compress. I always have just taken a washcloth and got it wet, rung it out, and placed in a ziplock bag, and heated it for about 10 seconds in the microwave. Wrap with another dry towel and it helps alot. I also tried the cold, but it never really helped me that much. I have also used the eye drops, but have found that the eye gel works so much better, although it says for night use, I have used it in the day. I really thought it was great when I would have to go see the eye doctor and he would put this medication in it(I have no idea what it was)that would numb my eyes. Oh man I would walk around for about 24 hours with no pain. It was great. Although it always left my face with a yellow tint on it under my eyes. I guess I should find out what that med was, just incase I ever have more eye problems again.

One of my favorite subjects! In my freezer at this moment are at least a dozen ice packs of various sizes and age. For me, the best ones are the gel packs, blue covers that are about 4′ X 10". I always wrap them in a thin towel, and usually go to sleep with them on my face.

I got started on them many years ago when I had my first eye surgery. The orders were : elevate the head of the bed 4 – 6 inches, and ice packs CONSTANTLY for 72 hours. They kept both the swelling and the pain down (because the cold makes the tissue somewhat numb).

There are the gel drops, and the eye gels that work especially well at night because they stay there longer. I have taped my eyes shut, used eye patches that kids use, and right now I am using an excellent product called Mepitac, which is a silicone tape that can re re-used. I know folks that use bandanas. Much of it is what you can get used to.

There are others that can use the water goggle-type things. My eyes, unfortunately, actually touched the lenses, so I couldn’t use them.

I think we are going to have a quick demonstration at the conference – everyone showing their favorite
    eye closing technique.

Hope some of this helps. Take care,

Thank you for your reply. The eye gel and gel drops are something that sounds like I could try it. These are more than just moisturizing eye drops, right? Are eye gel and gel drops over the counter? I’ve never noticed them. I definitely want something I can use overnight, and something that is moisturizing. You can’t ‘over’ moisturize your eyes can you? I sleep on my side so something that stays put on my eyes is exactly what I’m hoping for.

The gels and ointments are available over the counter. Some of the ointments are quite pricey, but there are a couple that are essentially generic. Ask the pharmacist. The only gel drops I know about are Celluvisc, and they are relatively expensive. They come in single use applications, but you can put them in a cup and stand them on end, and not have to waste the remainder. There are several brands of the ointments. Good luck!

    Take care,

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. So far I’ve found an over-the-counter, sensitive, preservative free, lubricant eye ointment called ‘Refresh PM’ that is working very well. I’m pretty sure someone on this site suggested it but I can’t find where right now. I work on a computer 40 hours a week so I can’t tell you how good it feels to have found something that really helps. Thanks again.

Hi LBKT, I may be the one your were referring to. I have used the PM ointment your referred to, extensively for a couple of years. Even though my eyes much better now than they used to be, I still keep it on hand and use it at night if they get too dry. I also work on a computer all day and use daytime lubricants as needed. At night, I continue to use an eyemask even when I don’t need the PM ointment. I found some online that are molded with "wells" for the eyes. This works great since one of the problems I had was that a "flat" eye mask would train my eyelashes downward (probably with the eye movement during sleep) and so then the eyelashes would obstruct my vision and they hurt too much to curl them up. The interiorly molded masks take care of this problem.

Hi azroses2322, please share with me the ‘daytime eye lubricants’ you mention. I use a moiturizing eye drop during the day maybe a dozen times when I’m at work and still feel eye irritation like it’s just not doing enough. I’ve tried 3 different sleep eye masks, none with the eye "wells" though. My problem with the eye masks I’ve used is that the next day I have double vision, mostly in my right eye, the worst one. I thought the sleep eye masks were supposed to be helpful by putting light pressure over night on ‘bulging’ eyes to help them not bulge as much but I must have been wrong about that. The eye masks with "wells", do they still work to help keep eyes shut over night? I think my right eye stays a small amount open when I sleep. I tried using the medical tape that’s easy to take off to keep my eyes closed over night but it really didn’t work well enough to keep doing it. Thank you for your post!

Please give advice… Has anyone tried the ‘Tranquileyes’ Eye hydrating therapy with or without the ‘ThermoEyes Enhancement System’? You can see it at http://www.dreamessentials.com/a_mask_tranquileyes.aspx Thank you. Any feedback at all would be extremely helpful.

Just a quick FYI ~ the eye masks are not intended to "keep the eyes from bulging," that’s not something you can control with an eye mask. The purpose behind the eye masks is to protect the cornea if either or both eyes do not close all the way while you sleep ~ the intention is to do something to make SURE the eye is covered. Typically it’s not just the eye mask, if that’s the issue ~ you would also need something between the eye and the mask, because any type of fabric can be abrasive.
