This is not a treatment that is used routinely in the US. I do know a doctor in Australia that is very involved in research for Graves’ Eye Disease. I will cut and paste this to him, and see if he can give us some idea.
Hi guys, I haven’t written in for a while, but thought I would let you know that Carla has had a really tough week. Firstly she has been very down physchologically as a result of coming off the 500 mg Methyl Prednisolone every Friday and going onto 250mg, is has caused almost like a drug withdrawal type effect in her. Anyway, she went in to the local hospital yesterday for her usual Friday dose (the now 250 mg) and this is dose number 7 out of a treatment of 12. The drip started and within the first 10 mls she told me she wasn’t feeling right and it was like the medication was going in to fast. (it was set to go in in 1 hour – the normal). A little bit later, she said she felt really hot and her eyes started pouring tears, from the outer not inner edge of her eyes. She then started to feel "wierd" and dizzy and like her brain was swelling up and then her eye lids started bulging to the point that her eyes closed. All this happened within 15 mins. The drip was turned off and within 2 hours, with no other treatment, she returned to normal. Ok, now this is wierd, she has had this treatment for 7 weeks. Steroids are used to treat severe allergic reactions, how can you have an allergic reaction to them themselves then. She is supposed to have 4 more doses over the next 4 weeks, and no one knws what to do. This reaction has not been experienced in other patients before that her doctor knows of. Today, her headaches (normally everyday anyway), have being worse than she normally gets and she have not been relieved with Neurofen. The doctor just said to ring him on Tuesday next week to give him a chance to work out what to do and speak to a few people. The whole thing is so bizarre. What do you think? I feel so let down by this happening when it was supposed to be giving us a 88% success rate.
