It’s a possibility with both. There were recent studies indicating PTU carried a higher risk for children, so they now recommend only choosing methimazole for kids, but it still carries the possibility of reducing your white blood cell count. You should be alert to a high fever and really bad sore throat (together). If that’s what’s going on with you, call the doctor and ask to have a lab test run.

    Hi,

I’ve been taking Methimazole for about five months now (still working on finding the right dosage).
I’ve been sick for a couple of weeks – started as a cold and a cough that lasted a few weeks, now seem to have a low grade fever the past few days… My question is – do I need to be worried about this more b/c I’m taking Methimazole? I’ve read a few websites that say to contact doctor immediately with these symptoms when you’re taking tapazole, but my understanding that the potential for reduced white blood cell count was an issue with PTU, but not Methimazole. Did I get this wrong? (it was part of the reason I requested this treatment instead of PTU)

    any suggestions are much appreciated!

    thank you!

Even without the sore throat, if you have been ill for a while, and are still sick, you should check with the doctor. A simple blood test can determine if your white cell count is appropriate, and it might be. But you also might need some medications to help you through the illness.

I hope you are feeling better soon.
