I typically don’t post on here, but do browse frequently but had a few questions on my labs.
Short history is I found out I was diagnosed in July, started PTU and didn’t react well stomach wise at all, switched endo’s to one I liked and decided to do RAI. I had RAI September 8th. I just had a few questions on whether or not my labs were going in the right direction.
Pre RAI labs (I had been off of 300mg of PTU daily for almost 3 weeks)
TSH 0.06 (0.34-5.6)
Total T3 1.75 (0.60-1.81)
Free Thyroxine 0.7 (0.5-1.4)1 month post RAI…I was feeling really hyper so we did labs (same lab ranges as above)
t4 9.4 (4.6-12.9) we didn’t do this one last time
TSH 0.14 it’s going up
Total T3 2.01 out of range and high
Free Thyroxine 1.3 getting highDo you guys think this is going the right way. I go for more labs in just over 2 weeks before my appointment. Since this last episode of feeling crummy about a week and a half ago I feel much better, my pulse has dropped to the 80’s as well..we were sitting over 100 consistently.
I do have a question about menstrual cycles as well. Has anyone ever experience lighter or nonexistant cycles directly after RAI? Mine has been almost not there, I’m guessing because I’m hyper right now. We were wanting to try for our third baby once my 6 months is up and my levels are straight and it worries me that things like this are off. Any encouragement?
We don’t interpret lab results here — it’s really complicated and we’re patients, rather than doctors. That said, one thing I learned about labs after my RAI was that there was a lag between the RAI and the type of results I was hoping for. I think part of it is due to the fact that TSH is a bit like a "moving average." And like any other moving average, it takes time for the average to change to accurately reflect a reality.
While hyperthyroid, our menstrual flow is reduced, typically.
I know this answer isn’t what you were looking for, but I think your best option is to make a list of questions for your next doctor appointment. But if you are having intense hyper symptoms, you might want to call the office to find out if there is anything that could be prescribed, temporarily, to make you more comfortable. Sometimes our doctors prescribe beta blockers during this time; and sometimes our doctors put us back on the antithyroid meds, temporarily, to provide a bit of respite from the hyperness.
I hope you are feeling better soon.
