I had a bit of the same issue for a while after RAI. My dose of replacement kept having to be lowered, and I eventually was taken off replacement completely for about two months, and then gradually it was necessary to add it back in. I, too, thought I was looking at surgery or another RAI. I do understand that this problem can be frustrating. Try to keep in mind that the disease is due to antibody production, and that the treatments (none of them) actually address antibodies. So there can be an antibody surge which affects whatever lingering thyroid cells there might be, and that can, temporarily, affect the level of replacement you need. I don’t understand all the ins and outs, but what counts for me is that the "fix" for me is much easier while on replacement than it was while I still had the full thyroid roaring in the background. And none of the hyper episodes seemed to sabotage my return to full health.

    Wishing you good health,

    Here’s my scenario…..

I had RAI in March, and in June went hypo. I was put on Levoxyl and blood work was good for 2 months. I recently started to get my mild hyper symptoms (ie. tremors, sweating, agitation, etc.). Got blood work done and have been hyper for over a month now. Meds were cut in half and repeat blood tests next month. I am pleased with my doctor but annoyed with the process of waiting and seeing what happens. I was told my thyroid may just be finally dying or a piece of it is still functioning. Time will tell, I guess. Being me, I am thinking down the road at if it is still functioning, what do I want to do. RAI again? It can’t be good for the body to do that again! I kind of feel as though I have been coming down with the flu for 2 weeks now and never got it……sometimes its hard for me to tell if its hyper symptoms, flu or allergies. I guess blood tests say its hyper. Ugh!! If anyone has any thoughts, experiences or suggestions, please feel free to send them my way. I appreciate it!

Thank you, Bobbi. That is helpful and good to hear someone else experienced a similar thing. I have been feeling better after cutting the replacement med in half, and return to the Dr. in November. One thing I do feel good about is I am just an email or phone call away from my Doctor and his nurse, and I am confident in them, which was a struggle in the beginning with another doctor. As you probably know, it is so important to feel good about your doctor and what they are doing.

    Thanks again.
