Hi Jen,
Thank you for the information of the Dr. Oz show regarding Graves Disease. You very rarely hear anything about this disease.I was wondering when you developed the eye disease.
I was diagnosed with GD about twenty years ago, and was on ATD’s on and off until my remissions became less and less. I just received
RAI on January 8,2010, and my two concerns are the eye disease and the weight gain. If you would, I would appreciate your story on these two
subjects.Thanks,
SusanHi everyone. I have been lurking here for a while and had trouble registering for some reason. I am 37 and was diagnosed with Grave’s Disease about 10 years ago. I was treated with RAI and became Hypo in 2002. I developed GED and had decompression surgery this past summer on both eyes. I did not have the traditional decompression done. My surgeon performed it without removing any bone. I am so pleased with the results!
In December I recieved a call from my surgeon asking me if I would be interested in appearing on the Dr. Oz. show. Ironically, it wasn’t regarding GED, it was about medical conditions that can get misdiagnosed as being panic attacks…..one of them being Grave’s Disease. That was my horrible experience so I jumped at the chance to be on the show…..even though I had to fly back and forth from New York and Florida since I was on vacation at the time it taped!
The episode is scheduled to air tomorrow, January 21, at 3pm on channel 5 here in NY/NJ. It usually repeats the following day, as well. I’m not sure of the times/channels in other states. The video preview can be found online at drozshow.com under "Thursday".
While I’m nervous about how I did and how the show was edited in the end, I am so excited and grateful to have had the chance to shine a light on Grave’s Disease on national television.
I look forward to sharing more of my story here on the forum and also reading about others.
Regards,
JennHi Jenn – Thanks for posting this…I just caught the episode this morning. Your eyes look fabulous…I wish mine looked that good. ” title=”Very Happy” />
I know that the time was limited, but I wish that Dr. Oz would have clarified that Graves’ is just one potential cause of hyperthyroidism…and also that not everyone with Graves will have the eye issues. Still, it was a great way to bring this issue to the public’s attention. I read SO many stories of Graves’ patients who were repeatedly misdiagnosed before FINALLY getting treatment.
Thanks for sharing your story!
