Great to hear the surgery went well. We look forward to learning more how well you are doing and keep us informed.
Well I did it, had a TT yesterday and over all feel pretty good. No damage to vocal cords or parathyroid glands. Very sore muscles though as I feel like Ive been in a fight. Lol The surgeon was terrific. The incision is no more than 2 inches long. Its amazing that today I feel no anxiety and my eyes are not as dry as they were. Very happy and Im at peace with my decision, no going back now anyway ” title=”Smile” /> My ENDO prescribed 125mg of Levoxl (sp) which I will start tomorrow. And hopefully be on my merry way to a happy and healthy normal life!
Hi Kristi,
First Thanks for posting your story and updates. I am 38 and felt you were writing about me & my symptoms. I’ve told people that I read your story and glad I’m not alone & I’m glad I’m not crazy either. I was just diagnosed w/GD a week ago, put on 10mg of Trapazole, and go in for blood work in a week. I am so glad I found this site. I am so thankful that your surgery was a success!!! I wish you the very, very best and a quicker than quick recovery ” title=”Very Happy” /> ” title=”Very Happy” /> ” title=”Very Happy” />Hello Chris and welcome!
Keep us posted on your progress throughout your treatment, and if you have questions along the way, feel free to post them.
Wishing you the best going forward!
James
I can’t believe its been almost a month since the surgery! Time has flown by and I still feel terrific. Still on the 125mg of Levoxyl, due to have my labs done in Mid April. My eyes feel really good, I actually went and saw my ophthamologist two weeks ago and he said that my eyes look better than they did last October!
Hope you are feeling better soon sounds like everything went well. Being new out here & for having GD for over a year, I do not know what TT is but I suspect it is what I fear which is the surgery to remove. I still have not given that a lot of thought, it scares the hell out of me.
GD scares me now. I am happy you found a comfort in this procedure, I hope I can have your courage someday.

Hey Kristi: I’m going tomorrow for a second opinion on how surgery will improve my quality of life with the thyroid gone. Can you enlighten me on the recovery time, etc. that your endocrinologist and surgeon has estimated? With the thyroid removed, the stimulator is gone, thankfully!! I wish you a speedy recovery and was wondering if you have TED as well. Thanks for any input and updates you can provide us. Also, is Levoxl and Synthroid in the same family or do you know what the difference is as a supplement??
Hi Sue, both drugs are levothyroxine, and there are some others. The basic thing to know is that it is preferable to continue on the same brand, rather than randomly switching. A nice explanation of this is on medicinenet.com
I presume TT means total thyroidectomy, but I am sure she will clarify this. I had a thyroidectomy, and it was a very good decision. You will hear from many others about this, but the most important thing is to get referrals about which surgeons do them regularly. That is the biggest thing. There are some really good posts about this, so browse around, probably looking for thyroidectomy, not total thyroidectomy. Just a terminology thing, but I think most people have referred to thyroidectomy.
After I had mine, all symptoms of hyper were gone, and I did not get hypo. I should mention that I had a SUB total thyroidecomy, so they left a little bit of thyroid gland on each side, which cranked out just the right amount of thyroid for many decades. Finally, I was a little hypo, and started on Synthroid. This site is a marvelous reference, I am glad you found it. Many years later, I developed thyroid eye disease (TED) and this site has helped me deal with THAT!!!
ShirleyHi Sue, I hope your second opinion with your surgeon went well for you. It was a big decision for me to make, but I weighed the pros and cons of each and in my case with the dry eyes as Yes I do have Thyroid Eye Disease going the surgical route was the best choice for me and to this day I have no regrets. I had my Total Thyroidectomy on March 1 which went off with zero complications. I stayed 24 hours and recovered very nicely at home. By that Wednesday I felt so good, I was feeling bad for so long with anxiety, heart palpitations that I didnt know what normal was. I took a week off from work. I had a follow up with my endocrinologist 2 weeks after along with an appt with the Opthamologist and last week I had a post op appt with the surgeon and all of them were in agreement that I have improved so much! Before the surgery I had gotten some flack from a friend who had the RAI and my endo really thought that was the best route but after seeing how well I did after the surgery she thought otherwise! I wish you luck on your decision. Take Care Kristi
