I am writing a brief acknowledgment of your post until a facilitator sees it, and answers. There have been some excellent posts by facilitators in the recent past addressing this subject. i think you re doing everything right by calling the doc. What is your pulse rate along with the other symptoms? Just something to be able to report along with them.
From what I think I remember from facilitator posts, is that there is thyroid hormone residual that hangs around for varied amounts of time after RAI. I also think I recall that in rare instances, RAI may need to be done more than once, but having said that, you probably are in a different place than that at this time.
The labs and your symptoms both matter a lot. It is possible that you levo dose may be too much, especially if you have some remaining hormone running around. Getting the "right place" can be a long and very frustrating process.
I suggest leaving a message at his office for a call-back when your labs are back. Just call’em, give them a heads up that you did get them drawn Monday morning. It’s probably reasonable to hope to hear from him on Wed/Thursday.If he said that there was no way that you could be hyper again (were those his word?) that is a bit of a concern to me.
But this is not really the time to go shopping for another endo. The symptoms you have mentioned certainly do sound like hyper symptoms, especially since you have been hyper, and are likely to recognize them.
I am sure that this will get straightened out, but like everything about this darn disease, it taxes us to the maximum.
I totally understand how you feel
ShirleySeveral months after starting replacement hormone, I went hyper again — slightly, but definitely. So my endo lowered my dose of replacement hormone. A few weeks later, it had to be lowered again. It was lowered until I was finally taken off replacement hormone altogether for a couple of months. Then, I went hypo, and had to start the replacement hormone once again. It was frustrating. I began to call my thyroid "TRex" among other names.
Not all thyroid tissue is necessarily killed off with RAI. If there is thyroid tissue remaining, it can be revved up by raised antibody levels. This is typically temporary, but it is necessary to monitor things carefully. Usually, or perhaps the word is "hopefully," there is not enough thyroid tissue left for you to be hyperthyroid off the replacement hormone. Sometimes the dose of RAI is not enough, but that only happens in about 10% of cases, from what I’ve read. So as long as you are not hyper on a lower dose of replacement, or on no replacement at all, you are still in much better treatment condition than you were before the RAI.
Your doctor’s comment aside, you ARE scheduled for blood tests, so he DID listen. I do hope you get some relief soon.
I had RAI done 9 months ago. Went HyPo 5 months after, started taking Levo and I was feeling like a new person. The best I’ve felt in years. About 2 weeks ago I started feeling HYpEr, sweating, sleeplessness, shakes, palpatations. I finally got ahold of my dr today and explained to him how I was feeling. He said theres no way I should be getting HyPer again. I thought one could. Is my dr just not paying attention to what I’m saying, I no how I feel. Anyways he orderd me blood work for Mon. I have to make it through the weeken and for him to call me back for my test results, which I hope dont take forever. Has anyone on here gone HYpEr after having RAI and while on Levo treatment, if so what was the treatment. Can a thyroid come back and need to have RAI done again.
Thank you, Karen -
