It sounds like you might be better off without this endocrinologist. Perhaps this was a doctor that truly could not tolerate having anyone question him. While chest pains may not be associated with the drug, they are indeed associated with too much thyroid hormone. And, hives can be caused by a drug reaction — although sometimes they come without that type of issue, as well — it’s hard to determine. If you cannot find another endo within a reasonable distance, you can try an "internist," or even a GP. You need treatment. And, no, the "natural route" was a dreadful suggestion. I suspect you might have asked about it, and the doctor was engaging in sarcasm, but there is absolutely no "natural" way to control thyroid hormones once the antibodies run amok.
I didn’t ask about a natural way although I do prefer natural remedies I have read up and saw that this won’t just go away on it’s own. I’m all for the drugs lol.
I just want to say that I am beyond horrified by this! I thought all doctors took the Hippocrate oath–"first, do no harm"–and it sounds like this guy did just the opposite to you, both by his unhelpfulness and his suggestion re: "working itself out." I hope you can quickly set yourself with a GP or internist who can help in the meantime.
Very sorry.

So at my appt. today my endo told me he would no longer see me. He told me I had become to difficult and that he wouldn’t see me anymore. He was pretty upset that I had a reaction to the methimazole and told me he didn’t understand why I had chest pain that " it wasn’t one of the side effects." He also told me and I quote "maybe you should just try a natural route and see if it worked itself out!" I’m pretty upset since the next endo is 2 hrs away ” title=”Sad” /> He was only 45.
as a medical profesional ( RN) I think you should report him to the medical board!!!! dr.s do not fire pt.s I have never heard of such a thing…..if I was you I would pull out all guns so it doesn’t happen to the next person if he is associated with a hospital or a group report him there also things have really changed in the past 15 years you are his customer and believe it or not you have the power you will really kill him by reporting him to your insurance carrier they will not like the loss of income and tell him sooooo!!!!! medicine is a big business and they treat it as such good luck cb
OMG! This is absolutely nuts! I totally agree, you are so much better without him- and he should be reported because he is a jerk, and that if he would give up on your case because he didn’t feel that you were reacting by the book- then just imagine other patients he "couldn’t help".
One thing I have learned about GD is that except for edema and TED, a lot of doctors treat it like fibromyalgia, or some of the other illnesses where some things are there but just not visible. You deserve better and I hope you find it. As for the chest pains- I have been having those for about 2 yrs now and no doctor has given me an answer for why yet. If you get anything, please let us know.
God Bless!
Buttamama28Have you seen a cardiologist? Probably a good idea to have a baseline cardiology work-up.
My first endo was a total "jerk" and had no bedside manner whatsoever! I talked to Ellen at the Graves’ Disease organization. When I told her his name, she marked it in the list that they have to refer patients to if they call and need to know endos for one reason or another. He will NOT be recommended! He is just not the doctor one needs to see when one is experiencing all the things that go along with GDS. I would suggest calling and, if his name is on the national list, I would tell her to mark it as not a good doctor to recommend to new patients. He doesn’t have the demeanor people need in their doctor.
I now have a different endo who is very compassionate. I’m waiting to hear from him as to when I can have the RAI. I’m looking forward to the light at the end of the tunnel.
