well, not sure how long "quite a while" is, but there has been a ton of summer sore throats this year, all viral, so that is a possibility. Assuming you mean "sore throat" and not sore neck.
I think doctors have quite a bit of clue, really. There certainly are doctors out there who are more preferable than other doctors. Are you going to an endo for your thyroid meds? If so, he took a look at your throat, said it was red. That fits with a sore throat.
But if your sore throat is like all the others in the US, it hurts a lot for a few days, maybe a week, then begins to get better.
    Sometimes with/without a fever.
If you mean "sore Neck" since your thyroid is inflammed, it may hurt. Inflammed things do hurt. That makes perfect sense.
You said you are hyper. What are your symptoms of hyper? From the lab ranges where I live, both of your TSH’S re in the normal range. But that really does not mean anything. If you are on tapezole, he is trying to get you to a normal lab state, and with a reduction in too much thyroid hormone, it is likely that you should feel better (re feeling agitated, eating a lot, losing weight, heat intolerance, very fast heart beat) Are you experiencing, or have you experienced any of these symptoms?

You will learn by reading this board that having Graves’ is not a quick fix. All of use want it to just go away, and unfortunately, it takes a while, with many steps, and a good endocrinologist experienced in Graves’ disease to help us through it. I am sure the facilitators will jump in with helpful thoughts for you. One of my faults is that I tend to write too much and too long. Sorry for the length of this.

Don’t say you are sorry, you are of help by commenting. We need all the help we can get. My sore throat has lasted a month. Last year I had it for 3 mo. I have been to 3 doc’s and said, it is Acid reflux. My throat is not red or anything. My endo said, it is inflammed? It hurts and is sore. I don’t know.

    Hi Tamara,
It is discouraging to have a sore throat. Did any of the docs you saw prescribe a medicine to help you with your acid reflux? They really do help.
Acid reflux HURTS, and definitely can cause a sore throat, as I imagine they told you.

    Hello,

I have had a chronic sore throat for a while now. I am hyperT and I am on Tapazole. I went to endo and he said, my thyroid is inflammed and I asked for an Ultraasound. I have never had one done. Just want relief from sore throat. I never feel well even on meds. My TSH is 1.??. I was 3.95 and went from 5mg/day seven days week, to 5 mg/day for 2 days and then off one. Anyone know why my thryoid is inflammed and have a sore throat chronically??? Doctors practice…they have no clue. Thanks for you all! God bless you!

Hi-I have never posted before, but read posts often. I have a 7 year old who was diagnosed with GD two years ago just before her 6th birthday. She is being treated by a great group of endos at a children’s hospital. She was on Methimazole for the two years and has been off of it for two months.

Anyway…..one of the many things I was told to keep an eye out for is a soar throat. They told me that if she has a sore throat I should have her labs run because it could be a side effect of the methimazole. White blood cells???? Fortunately, the two times that it happened it was just the beginning of a cold. Not sure if this helps or not, but thought that I would post just in case you find it helpful. Best of luck to you.

@ samsmom – Hello, and welcome to the boards!

@ Tamara – There could be several potential causes for your sore throat issues…I would suggest consulting a doctor who will help you get to the bottom of your symptoms. As Shirley said, the acid reflux could be causing your problems; and as samsmom mentioned, sore throat can be a warning of a serious side effect of the Anti-Thyroid Drugs. (You can check for this side effect by getting a Complete Blood Count done…it’s a simple blood test that will make sure your white blood cell count is in the normal range.) When the white blood cell issue occurs, the sore throat is usually accompanied by a fever, but it wouldn’t hurt to get tested just to make sure everything is OK.

Also, there is a condition called thyroiditis in which the thyroid gland becomes inflamed and sore. But this can be brought on by several different issues, ranging from permanent (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, which is another autoimmune thyroid condition) to temporary (for example, postpartum thyroiditis, radiation-induced thyroiditis, and thyroiditis induced by trauma or excessive palpation of the thyroid gland).

Hope that you can find some relief soon!
