I was diagnosed about 7 weeks ago. I have been taking methimazole and toprol. I am waiting for my numbers to become normal then I will have RAI. My other symptoms have decreased but now my ears are ringing and my throat is sore. I am not running a fever which my endo said would mean I have an infection. Is this normal ?

I would suggest giving your endo a call. Different doctors seem to take different levels of precautions with this. When I developed a sore throat right after starting on the meds, my own doc told me to wait a day and see if it got better. (It didn’t, and I got the labs done the next day…but it turned out to be a garden variety cold).

However, we had one doc at our recent conference say that *any* sore throat warrants an *immediate* trip to the lab for a WBC count…even if it’s the middle of the night and you have to go to the emergency room.

An extreme sore throat *with* a fever is most likely to be associated with side effects of the meds…but I believe in erring on the side of caution and letting your doctor determine your next steps.
