No, Susan, TED does not cause a puffy face. It can produce what appears to be soft tissue swelling in the eye area, but a puffy face, overall, is not something that is typically associated with it.
Has anyone on this forum with TED also experience a puffy face, This thyroid eye disease is really driving me crazy,
my whole face has changed, and I really do not think it is ever going to be normal. I have had TED for about five months.
Any comments would be very much appreciated. Thanks,
SusanIf you’re taking prednisone, that can cause the "moon face." Are you taking prednisone?
Hi Ski,
No I am not taking prednisone. Maybe it is just because of the puffiness under the eyes, and it appears that
that my cheeks are also swollen. I have no idea. I just cannot wait for this to be over. Everyone says that it
it has to take its course, but I feel that it is never going to be the same.Ski, I read on one of your posts that you had a mild case of TED, but I do not remember how long you said that it
lasted. Did you have the puffy lids and under eye bags. My lids are also red sometimes. They are more red some
days than others. I have no idea with this. Thanks,
SusanEveryone experiences TED a little differently, and one presenter at our conference in 2008 noted that some patients with TED *can* experience overall changes in their facial structure, including swelling. I have fairly mild eye involvement, and I have experienced this issue myself. I remember the presenter showing a picture, and I thought – "wow…that’s ME!"
However, I’ve noticed that it is even more pronounced when I consume a meal that is high in sodium the day before. So I don’t know that I can blame this on Graves’, but I do know that I didn’t have to deal with this issue pre-diagnosis! All I can do is hope that it settles down over time.
I’ve also felt the "puffy face" symptoms. It was weird because I wasn’t taking steroids at the time and I kept on feeling that my glasses were tight on the sides. Like everything was swelling. My experience with under-eye bags has had more to do with my eyes drying out at night – leaving me with disrupted sleep. I’ve been trying Oil of Olay’s Regenerist eye gel and seem to getting good results. I know its made for wrinkles, etc. but I find it very soothing after a rough night. If nothing else, it leaves my skin very hydrated and supple. ” title=”Smile” />

I think you can also use that gel at night, while you sleep. I’ve been reading lately that it’s important to put eye gels or even serums on at night, to work on things while we sleep. I’m giving that a try, along with the same brand’s night cream. It has a scent to it, which normally I try to avoid (scents, that is), but I think it’s lavender, and it seems to help my sleep as well as my face.
Susan,
I am going through exactly the same thing! I have had TED since last January. I am REALLY tired of it! I have Hashimotos but also had TSI antibodies. They weren’t high but I guess that confirms TED. I have bags above and below my eyes along with many other symptoms. I would really like to talk to someone else who has TED or has had TED to kind of help me through this. My face gets puffy sometimes too, we should talk!I’ve been on the methimazole for about 8 weeks. Feeling much better (although i hate the 5 lbs i’ve gained!). But i know what you mean about the puffy eyes and face. I wasn’t sure if it was the medication or the disease but from what i’m reading here – it is the disease. At first my eyes were irritated, blurry, dry and crusty. That part has mostly gone away – but for most of the day, my eyes are all squinty and swollen. My hands also feel a little puffy. Yes, this is a minor complaint but i guess it’s nice to know it’s not just me walking around with a puffy face. I suppose if i had any time, i could try ice packs in the morning. I’m not really sure what i’m eating that could be too salty – probably any prepared food is bad for me. But you try to find the time to cook organically being a single mom with 2 teenagers.
