Hi Kat, welcome!
I think you will hear from other people on this subject, and they may have some other thoughts. I am not aware of any scientific, evidence-based studies that address this topic. And feeling better or worse, when we are on the roller coaster of Graves, is so subjective. It is my thought that food does not improve or make worse, anything related to Graves’. I eat anything I want. What helps you feel "normal" again, is the wonderful light at the end of the long Graves’ tunnel, when you are not hyper anymore, thanks to tapezole. When you have decided which treatment option is right for YOU. When you have finished it, and have gotten regulated on Synthroid. You will feel good again, like your ole’ normal self!
There is a ton of good reference material on this site on the home page. In the posts, both current and past, almost any question, worry, anxiety and frustration will be addressed. YOu are not alone!
This is a wonderful, reliable site. Glad you found us!!!
ShirleyI have heard several people say that their nutrition habits help ease some of their symptoms ~ is there anything that has helped you… foods to avoid? foods to eat more of?
I am currently taking tapazole (started at 30 ~ dropped to 10 ~ i am now back up to 15) along with it, i take: prenatal vitamin *i am not pregnant, actually i had a hysterectomy a few months prior to being diagnosed with graves- last year sucked medically* and vitamin d. Is there anything else that seems to help you feel "normal" again?
OH, i also take melatonin at night to TRY to sleep…..
Thank you for your input!Hello – I would just add to Shirley’s comment to check with your doctor before making any major dietary changes or before adding any supplements. There are some supposedly beneficial supplements out there that contain iodine – which is like throwing gasoline on a fire when we are hypER. Other supplements may interact with meds that we are taking. Still other supplements may be fine in small amounts but toxic in larger amounts — so make sure your doctor knows everything you are taking and in what doseages.
As for nutrition, after a spell going gluten/egg/dairy free (which I don’t believe helped my Graves’ and was a VERY high maintenance lifestyle), I now just try to choose mostly healthy, unprocessed, whole foods.
Personally, I feel a return of my hypER symptoms when I overdose on sugary snacks…but there isn’t any scientific evidence that I am aware of to back this up. It might be helpful for you to keep a food journal for a while to see if you can spot any patterns in how you eat vs. how you feel.
