Hello all, my name is Nina and I’ve been dealing with an asymptomatic (toxic multinodlar goiter) since 1998. Total thyroidectomy will be performed Monday, April 18th. I’ve been fluctuating with weight for many years and am now at a whopping 132 lbs at 5′ 4". I’ve always been thin and the weight gain that is possible from the surgery is of concern. Although, some weight gain would be great but, I’m still not happy without knowing how to control it or if it can actually be controlled. What am I looking at here as far as emotional and mental stability? I hope that I will come through this ok and won’t have too many issues as far as recovery.

Any information as to what I will be dealing with post-surgery will be greatly appreciated? All info is welcome. Thank you in advance.

Hello – Just to give you a little perspective, I’m 5’4”…and I’ve never used the terms "132" and "whopping" in the same sentence. I’ll be doing a serious happy dance in the bathroom if I ever see that number on the scale again. If you look at recommended weight ranges using BMI, 132 is pretty much smack in the middle for someone who is 5’4".

But with that said, I totally understand what it’s like to not have any of the clothes in your closet fit…and to not feel comfortable in your own skin. I just posted this on another thread, but here are a few recommendations from a nutritionist who presented at our 2009 conference:

    1. Include breakfast daily within 2 hours of waking up.
    2. Don’t go longer than 5 hours in between meals
    3. Select “high volume” and “high fiber” foods such as fruits, veggies, and whole grains
    4. Limit servings of healthy fats to 1 per day
    5. Prioritize at LEAST 7 hours of sleep a night

Once a doctor’s clearance is obtained to engage in activity, she also recommended 150 minutes per week of physical activity, plus strength training 2 times per week.

If you do a search on this site for "surgery" or "thyroidectomy", there are several gals who have been great about documenting their experiences. Their posts should give you good insight in terms of what to expect.

    Best of luck!
